Hugo Fanlo, Predictive Diagnostics Manager at EDP Renewables in Spain
Career description - freely formulated by the organiser:
Hugo Fanlo Virgos began his professional journey in the world of science, driven by a fascination for how molecules behave and interact. After earning his MSc in Chemistry from the University of Oviedo in Spain, he pursued a PhD at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands—one of Europe's top research institutions. There, he explored the complexities of dynamic molecular networks, catalysis, and self-replicating systems. His work was published in top-tier journals like JACS and Angewandte Chemie, establishing him as a rising voice in the field of chemical research.
But Hugo’s path took a turn—away from the lab bench and toward the real-world challenges of renewable energy. In 2015, he joined EDP Renewables, one of the world’s leading wind energy operators. At first, he brought his analytical mindset to performance management, helping optimize operations. But his deep understanding of complex systems and how small variables affect outcomes soon led him into the specialized world of predictive diagnostics.
Today, Hugo leads the Predictive Diagnostics team at EDPR. His role is about listening to the hidden signals of wind turbines—through vibration patterns, lubricant chemistry, and data streams—to catch issues before they become problems. Under his guidance, EDPR has advanced the use of condition monitoring and lubricant analysis across its fleet. He has become a regular speaker at industry conferences, helping bridge the gap between chemistry, engineering, and clean energy.
Hugo’s story is one of transformation: from decoding molecules to decoding machines. It’s a journey that shows how deep scientific curiosity can power solutions far beyond the lab—helping keep the wind blowing in the right direction for the future.
