S2 - Gearbox & Drivetrain

13 Nov - From 12:50 to 14:40

Introduction

The gearbox is the component that causes the most downtime for a wind turbine. It is the most significant component from an operations or an O&M perspective. The costs related to gearbox damage or dysfunction are substantial. Then again, it’s known that the gearbox is just the fuse that goes off and that the actual cause is very often found outside the gearbox. On this roundtable, we look closer at Gearbox, but when looking for root causes, we also include the entire drivetrain.

Feichin McCormack, O&M Engineering Manager at Energia Generation

Energia is based in Dublin and operates a diversified portfolio of GE, Siemens, Vestas, Nordex, and Enercon. Regarding the gearbox and drivetrain, they are curious about failure modes and maintenance/monitoring options to reduce risks. Usually, these turbine-specific owners' meetings are hosted by O2O WIND, but we have asked our dear members to help us in Madrid.

A big thank you to Energia Renewables!

Is this your cup of tea?

Are these the challenges you are expected to develop in your professional role?

  • How to manage the fatigue on gearbox components due to high rotational speeds and torque fluctuations.

  • How to handle premature wear and bearings degradation due to harsh operating conditions and dynamic loads.

  • Monitoring lubricant quality and viscosity to prevent breakdown of the lubricant and minimize frictional losses.

  • How to detect and handle shaft misalignment issues to prevent excessive loading and premature failure of gearbox components.

  • Managing the gradual wear of gear teeth due to contact stresses and surface fatigue.

  • Preventing overheating of gearbox components due to high ambient temperatures and prolonged operation.

  • Solutions to monitor gearbox and drivetrain – what works well and what to avoid?

Joining this discussion with identical peers from other WTG owners will give you a broader understanding, an expanded network and valuable insights.

Your top challenge – directly included

This roundtable is based on real and current challenges held among the participants. You will have direct input on your top challenge and insights into your peer’s top challenges.

  1. Before the event - submit your top challenge.

  2. At the event - discover your peers' challenges, have input on yours and discuss solutions.

  3. After the event - receive a summary of the findings from all roundtables, providing valuable insights for all.

Once you have registered your team, each individual will receive a link to select roundtables and submit their top challenges. A dummy is shown at this link.
