S3 - Lightning – Protection, Repair & Claims

13 Nov - From 15:10 to 16:50

Introduction

For wind turbine owners, lightning poses significant challenges, particularly regarding lightning protection systems (LPS) and repair protocols. Negotiating with OEMs for lightning-related claims can be difficult; despite the ability to measure strikes and claim that measurements are within the range of what the LPS should handle, it is still the WTG owner who ends up paying. The need for robust LPs and effective claims management strategies to mitigate downtime and operational disruptions are still to be found.

Your moderator for this roundtable

Feichin McCormack, O&M Engineering Manager at Energia Generation

Energia operates a diversified portfolio of GE, Siemens, Vestas, Nordex and Enercon turbines. Their turbines are found across Ireland, and their headquarters is in Dublin. Usually, these turbine-specific owners' meetings are hosted by O2O WIND, but we have asked our dear members to help us in Madrid.

A big thank you to Energia Renewables!

Is this your cup of tea?

Are these the challenges you are expected to develop in your professional role?

  • Even if the LPS should withstand lightning damages within certain measurement levels the WTG owner has no success in negotiating - how can this be changed?

  • How to maintain the reliability of LPS to minimize damage to critical components.

  • Negotiating with OEMs for warranty claims and repair agreements amidst challenges in proving lightning-related damages.

  • What shall we demand from the OEM in regard to compliance with standards and the provision of lightning performance documentation?

  • Documentation and Reporting: Ensuring thorough documentation and reporting of lightning strikes and resulting damages for insurance and warranty claims.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with industry regulations and standards for lightning protection and repair procedures.

  • Experiences of insurance company’s point of view on damages and claims due to lightning?

Joining this discussion with identical peers from other WTG owners will give you a broader understanding, an expanded network and valuable insights.
